Highway UI : HOV Lane

My suggested improvements for a common highway sign.

  1. This is a nice try, but there really is nothing about this design that needs to be changed. The contrast on the sign makes sense to be white on black, and not black on white because it makes it easily visible and distinguishable in daylight. Some of your text (i.e. "PEOPLE PER VEHICLE" might be too small to read, and might be too colloquial for international travelers who use US roadways, 2+ ONLY is sufficient enough. The motorcycle logo has the same problem, there is no international logo for motorcycle. Also by putting the "OK" inside the motorcycle logo just adds to the visual clutter and will be indistinguishable when drivers are passing by. The actual physical shape of the sign, as well, is impractical from a few perspectives - The fact that it isn't squared off makes it hard to mass produce, and the "LEFT Lane" hanging off the side is distracting from the rest of the information. Overall you are attempting to fix something that isn't currently broken. I don't mean for this to sound like a harsh review, just wanted to throw in my two cents!

    1. I'll have to disagree that this sign couldn't use improvement. What spawned my post was being a user of this sign and personally struggling to parse the information.

Great points, I appreciate it. Nothing about UI critiques can ever be too harsh ... ;)

      - People Per Vehicle was put in for legal purposes, I figured that would be needed -- so therefore it is small text. I would love to jettison that.
      - I'll also have to differ that the motorcycle logo is too hard to read. I actually stole the logo - it is the official motorcycle logo for the US roadways AFAIK. I do agree that it could even be more improved.
      - I am assuming a perfect world in which I have an unlimited budget per sign .. a couple of my design ideas would cost more
